New to Raw Feeding?

A short, honest guide to how raw feeding works and how ordering with Northern K9 Raw works.

What is raw feeding?

Raw feeding is exactly what it sounds like — feeding your dog a species-appropriate diet built from raw muscle meat, raw meaty bones, organs, and (sometimes) fruit & veggies. The goal is to mirror what dogs evolved to eat.

What does 80/10/10 mean?

It's a ratio: 80% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 10% organs(with half of the organ being liver). It's the simplest balanced raw diet, and most of our ground meals are pre-mixed to this ratio so you don't have to balance anything yourself. Some recipes also include 30% fruit & veggies (70/30 or 60/10/30).

How ordering works

  1. Browse the catalog and add items to your cart.
  2. Submit your order at checkout — you'll get an email invoice with our e-transfer details.
  3. Send an Interac e-Transfer to sales@northernk9raw.com. Autodeposit is on, so you don't need a security question. Include your order reference in the message.
  4. Once your shipment arrives in Fort McMurray, Sabrina will text you to arrange a pickup time and location.

How to transition your dog

For most healthy adult dogs, a simple cold-turkey switch is fine — just feed raw at the next meal. For sensitive dogs or puppies, transition over 7–10 days by mixing raw with the current food, gradually increasing the raw portion.

If your dog has health conditions, check with your vet first.

Handling raw food safely

  • Keep raw food frozen until you're ready to use it.
  • Thaw in the fridge, not on the counter.
  • Use stainless or glass bowls and wash them with hot soapy water after each meal.
  • Wash your hands and any surface that touched raw food.
  • Raw pet food is not for human consumption.

Common questions

How much should I feed?

A common starting point is 2–3% of your dog's ideal adult body weight per day, split across one or two meals. Adjust up or down based on body condition.

Do I need supplements?

On a varied complete-ratio diet (e.g. our 80/10/10 mixes rotated across proteins) most dogs don't need much. Some people add fish oil or omega-rich fish like herring once or twice a week.

Can I feed cooked instead?

Yes — but never cook bones. Cooked bones become brittle and dangerous. Only feed bones raw.
